Our Story — From Family Care to Everyday Healthcare

Our story began in 1994, with a neighbourhood provision shop serving the everyday needs of the community.

The shop was on the ground floor, while our family lived seven floors above.

In 1995, while caring for her in-laws, Koh, one of our founders, experienced a challenge familiar to many caregivers: finding the supplies needed to care for someone at home.

From wound care supplies to adult diapers and nutritional products, the items she needed were often available from different suppliers. Obtaining everything meant travelling from one place to another, sometimes across Singapore.

There was no single shop she knew of where she could conveniently find them all.

That experience helped shape a new direction for the family business.

While continuing her caregiving responsibilities and working to earn additional income for the family, Koh began introducing medical supplies to the shop.

In those early days, she handled almost everything herself. She received orders, prepared invoices, sourced stock, packed purchases and made deliveries.

What began as a small part of the neighbourhood business gradually grew through everyday experience, determination and the needs of the people she served.

Koh — Connecting with People, Curious by Nature

Life wasn't always easy for Koh. Alongside the responsibilities of raising a family, caring for loved ones and helping to provide for the household, she faced the everyday challenges of building a livelihood.

Throughout those years, her ability to connect with people remained one of her greatest strengths.

Among family, friends and colleagues, Koh is someone people naturally turn to. She takes the time to listen, shares her perspectives openly and has a way of encouraging others to move forward.

Curiosity is another part of her character. She has always been willing to explore unfamiliar ideas, discover new products and give different approaches a chance. When she believes something may be useful, she is often the first to suggest trying it.

Her journey was not one she travelled alone. The encouragement, friendship and contributions of people around her also played a part in shaping the family's business.

Today, she remains actively involved alongside her two sons and the wider team, bringing her experience, warmth and willingness to explore new possibilities into the everyday work of Tong Hai Medical.

Two Sons, Different Experiences, One Shared Purpose

As the business developed, Koh's two sons joined her, each bringing different experiences and perspectives.

Her Elder Son — Experience Through Doing

Her elder son joined the family business in 2002, bringing a background in marketing and a particular interest in rehabilitation equipment.

Through years of hands-on experience, he developed an understanding of rehabilitation products, the people who use them and the practical considerations involved in everyday care.

His entrepreneurial journey later led him to establish his own company and brand, Plexus Care. Today, he continues to contribute his experience to Tong Hai Medical, working alongside his mother, younger brother and the wider team.

His experience in rehabilitation equipment, business development and operations adds another perspective to the family's shared knowledge.

Her Younger Son — Experience Across Healthcare and Hospitality

Her younger son joined the family business in 2015, bringing professional experience in nursing and luxury hotel hospitality.

As a registered nurse, he worked in general wards and intensive care, while also participating in nursing projects and serving as a representative and voice for junior nurses. These experiences developed his clinical understanding, communication skills and appreciation for teamwork.

He later pursued a career in luxury hospitality, beginning as a concierge and progressing through training and supervisory roles to assistant manager. His experience centred on finding practical solutions to unusual guest requests, developing colleagues and coordinating people and resources to deliver thoughtful, seamless service.

Together, his healthcare and hospitality experiences shaped his approach to problem-solving, teamwork and understanding the needs of others, complementing the practical knowledge shared by his mother and elder brother.

Three Experiences, Shared Every Day

Although each family member brings a different background, what matters most is how their experiences come together.

Koh brings years of caregiving, entrepreneurship and neighbourhood retail experience, along with an instinct for understanding people and recognising new possibilities.

Her elder son contributes hands-on knowledge of rehabilitation equipment, marketing, business development and operations.

Her younger son brings perspectives shaped by clinical nursing, hospitality, staff development and coordinating solutions to complex requests.

Their experiences are not kept separate.

They discuss customer needs, exchange knowledge, question ideas and learn from one another through the everyday challenges of running the business.

Together with their team, they continue to develop a practical, experience-based approach to serving customers.

A New Chapter in 2016

As the healthcare business continued to develop, Tong Hai Medical Pte. Ltd. was incorporated in 2016.

This marked a new chapter in a journey that began with a neighbourhood provision shop in 1994 and a small selection of medical supplies in 1995.

Over the years, our product range and operations have expanded to include medical supplies, nursing consumables, wound care products, nutritional support and rehabilitation equipment.

Although Tong Hai Medical operates as a separate company from the original provision business, the family's experience and commitment to serving the community remain part of its foundation.

Practical Care, Built on Experience

Today, Tong Hai Medical serves individuals, families, caregivers and healthcare professionals.

We maintain a wide selection of everyday and specialised healthcare supplies, with ready stock of many commonly needed items.

Our Experience Studio also allows customers to explore, compare and experience rehabilitation and homecare equipment in person.

We believe that practical product knowledge matters.

A wheelchair is more than its specifications. A nursing bed is more than its dimensions. And selecting everyday nursing supplies may involve considerations that are not always obvious from a product description.

Our role is to help customers understand their options, recognise practical differences and make decisions suited to their needs.

We do not claim to have every answer. But we believe in listening, sharing what we know and helping customers find a practical way forward.

Continuing What We Started

Much has changed since 1995.

The selection of products is wider. The systems are different. The healthcare needs of the community continue to evolve.

Yet Koh remains actively involved in the daily operations of Tong Hai Medical, working alongside her two sons and their team.

The three continue to share their knowledge and experiences, just as they have throughout the business's development.

The experience that helped shape the business remains relevant today.

Caring for someone can be demanding. Finding the supplies they need should not have to be another unnecessary difficulty.

From one generation to the next, we continue to carry forward the knowledge, experiences and values that brought us here.
